Weighted Blanket - Purple Camo
What are Weighted Blankets?
Weighted blankets are exactly as they sound, blankets that have added weight to them. The amount of weight varies greatly depending on its intended use. The universal use for weighted blankets is for
a calming effect. There have been several studies that show placing
a weighted blanket on a child or adult suffering from Sensory Integration Disorder or other Autism related disorders
produces a calming effect. This can be a very desirable result because sleeping problems seems to be a common issue among children and adults with sensory related issues.
Who uses them?
Weighted blankets were first used by occupational therapists during treatment
of those with sensory disorders but quickly became a house
hold item. Occupational Therapists
would use it during therapy to calm over stimulated children and
to teach them how to properly cope with over stimulation. They teach them to use the blanket as a mood stabilizer that can
be used anywhere inside or outside the therapy
room.
Due to the need to use it in the home, clinic, and public it has to be durable and discreet. Take a look out
our blanket and look at a normal blanket; you will not be able to tell
the difference unless you pick it up! We use the same fleece and cotton
materials other blankets are made
out of and are machine washable so no matter what gets on it
you can get it off!
How should I use them?
Our weighted blankets are very versatile and range in weight
so the uses are many. In the home people
will use the blankets when it is
time for bed and they need to get their child to sleep. Since a lot of those
affected with Sensory Integration Disorder or Autism have
trouble sleeping or falling asleep this is perfect for helping them and you get more rest!
Also it is commonly used as a tool to calm an over stimulated child or adult. You simply evenly distribute the weight over their body without
restraining them with it and leaving it on them for 15 – 20 mins. You will see
the calming effect almost instantaneously.
Occupational Therapists typically use them to calm
an over stimulated child, or
they will stimulate them and then calm to help teach them self calming techniques.
